Islam and Sustainability
In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Especially Merciful
The Purpose of the Islam and Sustainability platform (“IAS”) is to emphasize the importance of sustainable behavior as a key aspect of Muslim identity.
Sustainability is deeply rooted in Islamic teachings, which call for stewardship, collective responsibility, and justice in protecting the environment and ensuring equitable resource distribution.
Muslims are guided by a long-term vision of their mission on Earth, knowing they are accountable to God for their actions.
At IAS, we are committed to promoting sustainable behavior within the Muslim community, both individually and collectively.
One for all, all for One!
Responsibility involves acting as stewards of the Earth, using resources wisely and protecting the environment. Justice ensures fairness and equity, respecting the rights of all beings and future generations. Accountability means individuals are answerable to God for their actions, promoting ethical and sustainable behaviors.

Two Sides of the Same Coin
Unity of God (Tawhid)The Oneness of God signifies that all creation is interconnected and sacred. This unity demands that humans live harmoniously with nature, avoiding actions that disrupt the divine balance.
Stewardship (Khilafah)Humans are entrusted as stewards of the Earth by God. This role requires protecting the environment and responsibly managing resources as a religious duty.
Balance (Mizan)God created the universe with balance and order, which must not be disturbed. Sustainable practices are essential to maintaining this balance, preventing environmental degradation.
Justice (Adl)Justice in Islam extends to the environment and future generations. Sustainable actions ensure equitable resource distribution and protect vulnerable ecosystems.
Excellence (Ihsan)Ihsan encourages doing good and striving for excellence in all actions. This principle supports adopting sustainable practices that benefit both society and the environment.
Innate Disposition (Fitrah)Fitrah is the natural state of purity and harmony within and with creation. Maintaining a pure environment aligns with this innate human disposition, avoiding actions that disrupt nature.
Purification (Tazkiyah)Tazkiyah involves the purification of self and surroundings. It promotes environmental practices like reducing pollution and conserving resources for a cleaner, purer environment.
Contentment (Qana’ah)Qana’ah teaches contentment and satisfaction with what one has. Promoting contentment helps reduce overconsumption and waste, supporting a sustainable lifestyle.
Charity (Zakat)Charity involves giving a portion of wealth to those in need. It supports sustainable development, alleviates poverty, and fosters social and environmental well-being
